Between September 29 and October 2, the Mediterranean city of Valencia will host the International Furniture and Lighting Fair of Valencia, where the latest interior design trends, high-quality furniture, innovative lighting technology, and the cream of European design will be on display. It says a lot about us how much importance we attach to this space, how carefully we choose furniture and accessories to really make us feel good. So the focus is first of all on the place our minds of the image of a table setting, whether we associate it with the promise of togetherness and how important is it to us that it supports a sense of family togetherness?

In a scrappy or too sterile dining room, we often find ourselves not really using it, it’s easier to eat a few bites at the counter, because the setting is awkward or the lights are too cold. To make the dining room community space, we need to consider how many people will be in it, what our habits are, how big the space is and what style we are thinking of.

The dining room is usually shared with the kitchen, there is rarely a separate room for meals and it is easier to serve meals if the hostess (landlord) and her family members or guests can be in the same room. In the trendy American kitchen layout, which is common from small apartments to large houses, it is also important that the dining area is not only designed to save space. Even homes with smaller floor areas can be furnished practically with imaginative solutions. Pinterest

The centrepiece of the dining room is the table with matching chairs, ideally accompanied by a serving cabinet, but in the absence of the latter, it is best to place the table near the kitchen island or counter. Find out well in advance how easy it will be to organise and whether you will be able to talk comfortably to each other while cooking and packing. In tight spaces, make sure that the dining area does not feel like a kitchen, but rather the other way round. With a small footprint, a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling kitchen, for example, blends nicely into the space, so a prominent dining set can be used to good effect. Pinterest

The table can be classically rectangular, elegantly oval, or practically round, wall-mounted in a small space, folding square or semi-circular, expandable in a larger space, with pull-out “multi-purpose” seating.  Pinterest

But there are also asymmetrical or wavy-edged shapes that evoke the forms of nature, creating a distinctly organic effect. Smaller or larger round tables add softness to the space, creating a comfortable atmosphere of equal seating. If you don’t have to move the table against the wall, make sure you leave at least one metre of aisle space behind the chairs.

In terms of dimensions, the recommended width of the dining area is 70 cm, but it should not be less than 50 cm even for the smallest table. For circular tables, calculate that a 90 cm diameter will seat four to a maximum of six people, while a 150 cm diameter dining table will seat six to a maximum of eight. For serving, it’s a good idea to leave as much space as possible in the middle of the table, and you might even want to check the size of the place settings with newspaper. Pinterest

When choosing chairs, the optimum height and a seating surface at least 60 cm wide are very important. For armchairs with arms, it is a real interior design problem if the small armchairs cannot be pushed under the table, so if you don’t want to insist on this, choose armless or even trendy swivel chairs or ergonomic, slightly reclining backrest seating. If space is limited, a bench seat can be a nice alternative, provided it is well cushioned, comfortable and spacious. In all cases, the legs of the table should not be an obstacle to stretching after meals, for example, a sturdy table with column legs is a good solution. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of pairing, choose a ready-made set or a piece of furniture, the latter being particularly useful if the dining room is in the same room as the living room.

When choosing the material, make sure that the table top matches the colour of the tray or open shelves, and the front of the cupboards. Organic natural wood furniture such as walnut, beech, pine or oak can bring a touch of nature into your home, but glass, stone and metal table tops are also popular. In addition, easier to maintain and clean, wood-effect table tops are also available in a myriad of colours and styles. The luxury of an interior is in the sophisticated details, so once you’ve chosen the right furniture in the right size, material and colour for your taste, let’s find out what timeless decorative elements you can add to your dining room. When choosing the material for tablecloths, cushions and curtains, sure they are easy to clean. The carpet should always extend well beyond the chairs so that it doesn’t hinder movement. If you have chosen a glass, marble or metal table, place a shelf or wall picture in the dining area for a warmer effect. It’s good to know that bright, shiny surfaces create a modern effect and reflections add a sense of depth. The asymmetrical arrangement of table decorations, the repetition of objects and shapes creates a pleasant, calming effect. We often feel reassured when we’ve chosen the right furniture, placed the order, received confirmation, and know that we’ll soon be the happy owners of a great piece of furniture.

Then, when the package arrives, it turns out that there is a huge gap between the furniture you want and the pile of objects and tools that are in the package. Then we are faced with the challenges of assembling furniture.

Furniture assembly is not for everyone

At SYRA we try to design our furniture so that the assembly process is not as daunting as it usually is.

There are certainly two common stereotypes about furniture assembly:

  1. a great way to spend time with your partner, family or friends;
  2. a manly thing to do.

The first stereotype was obviously implanted in our minds from advertising, assuming that we’d never in our lives curled up in our living rooms swearing deliciously or throwing our hairpins at assembly drawings, while desperately searching for the number eight screw, which obviously couldn’t have been packed with the furniture, because it looks exactly like number six, of which there are two more, perhaps because if there were no number eight… more or less, more or less, more or less.

We have yet to see a single person or a family member who has spent quality time assembling furniture.

And instead of showing advertisements that tell us that we should feel bad even if we don’t feel good about assembling the furniture, the big furniture manufacturers could try to help us get through the whole thing as quickly as possible with simpler designs and easier-to-understand manuals.

So not only is home furniture browsing not a great pastime, it’s one of the worst things you can do in your spare time.

Furniture assembly is not for everyone

The other social expectation that oppresses the individual on this issue is that, in an endlessly sexist and gender-neutral way, manual labour in the home is for some reason strongly correlated with the socially recognised image of men. We believe that there is a much more pleasurable and enjoyable measure of masculine expression, so we try to find ways of assembling our furniture that do not take up more than necessary space for other, presumably more desirable pastimes.

Alternative: call a furniture assembler

Many people, precisely because they already know that this assembly is not so much fun, pay serious extra money to turn the pile of parts into furniture, or ask friends, acquaintances and family members to help them jump at the chance to do it. So either our wallets or our usable favour-credits suffer the damage of a complicated and, to us, opaque assembly method. We don’t want to put our customers in this situation.

It’s every furniture buyer’s dream that when the courier delivers the new furniture you’ve been waiting for, you just unpack the cardboard box and in a few moments the table, bookshelf or wardrobe is there its entirety.

This is how the concept of paneled furniture was invented, but today it has mutated into a monster made up of thousands of screws, nails, little things, unrecognisable gadgets and a whole host of other strange tools and implements. Let’s go back to basics.

Panel furniture: what is it and what are its advantages?

The concept is for the seller to be able to sell complete furniture in a way that is easy to pack and transport. In return, the buyer can have the furniture delivered to their home, without having to spend time, energy and money to get the furniture into the home. The trade-off: everyone works a bit harder because the seller has to figure out how to assemble the furniture at home quickly and easily, and the buyer has to will do the job. Everybody wins a little and loses a little. If only capitalism were that fair in all areas. It is, by the way, a much greener option to buy furniture that can be ordered online on a tile than to drive or take public transport to three or four places, spending long hours of our free time and energy and spending it on other things. At SYRA, we offer an even simpler assembly process, and the furniture will arrive at your door almost in one piece.

What we don't like about the average piece of furniture

Panel furniture was invented to make our lives easier. Initially, it did not require a carpenter/joiner’s qualification, nor even that someone had a better than average grade in a technical skill, or that they had a “skilled friend” who could put the furniture together “at a good price”.

In principle, all that was needed was all the prefabricated and drilled furniture parts, a few easily recognisable fastening parts, a clear assembly guide and, of course, a screwdriver.

We worked out a solution

We like something simple and likeable. Furniture should bring joy from the moment it arrives until the last day it makes a home. We have ordered furniture from many places, many times.

There were some shelves that we managed to build in two or three hours, after only three partial dismantling operations, but there were also some where we saw the quality and quantity of the parts supplied and called the “clever connoisseur who knows a good price”.

Even the biggest multinationals, which are nominally committed to simplicity and simplicity, often just ignore the fact that their furniture will be ordinary people. People who, if they could, would choose a different pastime from assembling furniture.

At SYRA, we try to keep this in mind as much as possible.

Our solution is simple: if we can put it together, so can you. Our benchmark:

We want to help you find warmth, peace and calm in every moment spent at home (or at least not at our hands if we ‘t), because we know that there is not much time at home.

It’s important that everything around in the home is for us, and that it gives us satisfaction rather than annoyance.

Prefabricated furniture gives you the freedom to order and deliver any furniture want, and then get a full-value piece of home furniture for a reasonable amount of energy spent at home.

How durable is laminated furniture?

Flatness has no effect on durability. A piece of flat-pack furniture can last for generations just as as a custom-made piece of furniture, provided of course that it is used for what it was made for.

What should we do to preserve our laminated furniture?

It should be treated in exactly the same way as any other piece of furniture, taking care to use the right cleaning products for the surfaces. Note that different cleaning products are recommended for wood and tiles.

How much do you charge for assembling flat-pack furniture?

Our experience has been that the price of a meal for four in a restaurant does not move anyone. And if you need not just one, but several pieces of furniture to assemble, it can be a multiple of this. We want to save everyone that.

Because it’s easy to transport, it’s cheaper than custom-designed assembled furniture due to mass production, and it’s cheaper to ship because it can be packed to any courier company’s standard dimensions. As the service of the delivery companies has evolved, it is now possible to deliver larger pieces of furniture in one shipment, so we can do most of the assembly in the workshop.
